We have had lots of fun exploring eggs in nursery. We went to see the chicks in Miss Parker’s classroom and have had lots of fun playing with plastic eggs …

Then we explored real eggs. At first we were very gentle and tried not to crack them but then we decided it was much more fun to see what was inside!

How can you continue learning at home?

You can have lots of sensory fun with things you have around your home. It can get a little messy so you might want to try outside or in a big container like a washing up bowl. You could try…

Making bubbles with washing up liquid, shower gel, bubble bath or shampoo, add whisks to help build muscles and mix up the bubbles.

Cornflour or custard powder and water makes ‘gloop’. It is a solid when you touch it quickly but if you move slowly turns to liquid.

Jelly is lots of fun to explore and a great sensory experience!

Shaving foam feels great when spread on a tray, use fingers to practice drawing and writing. Add sand to create fun sand foam and add bricks and diggers.

Before you throw away old cereals they are fun to explore in a tray with diggers and trucks or animals. Try cornflakes, oatmeal or cheerios.

Rice, dry pasta, popping corn, dried beans, lentils, salt and sand are great for filling trays.

Pretty much any small items are great for filling trays and containers for lots of fun sensory play!

Tealight Pancakes

Yesterday we celebrated pancake day, we decided to make our pancakes a bit differently this year, the children cooked the pancakes!

First we mixed up the pancake batter then we poured it into a little tin. Very carefully we lit a tea light candle and put it in a holder. We thought about how to keep ourselves safe. Then we put the tin over the candle, because it was made of metal the tin got hot so we added a peg to hold onto.

 

We watched the mini pancakes cooking. We could see them changing colour and changing from liquids.

Abraham – “When it’s cooked it won’t be wet anymore”

Paige – “I can see smoke (steam) it’s very hot”

Olivia – “You got to stay back”

Romeo – “I can see bubbles, its cooking”

Yusuff – “When it is cooked the pancake changes colour then you can toss it in the air”

Caitlyn – “I smell pancakes!”

We tried adding different amounts of mixture and cooking it for different times to see what happened.

We used the spatula to carefully turn our pancakes over. Then we added toppings.

We had lots of fun cooking the pancakes ourselves, we had to work very carefully and safely. As the pancake cooked slowly we could watch all the changes that happened. We liked being able to use the spatula ourselves to turn the pancake over. We also had some different flavours of pancake to try, lemon was our favourite!

How can you continue learning at home?

Being able to see how things change really helped the children to understand what was happening. At home you could cook together and watch how things cook.

The children loved it when they could see, hear and smell the changes that were happening. Why not try this at home by making your own play dough, helping to cook dinner, baking together, making popcorn or cooking pancakes?  Can the children talk about what they can see, hear and smell?

Seaside Poetry

Seaside Poetry

In nursery we share our ideas in lots of different ways. This week we have been making 3D mind maps.

We started with a treasure box full of things that reminded us of the seaside.

We thought about all the things we knew about the seaside. We thought about the things we might see, hear, taste, feel and even smell. As we thought of ideas we shared them with our talk partners then we stretched out the words and Miss Hulme wrote them on cards or we sounded them out to write ourselves.

 

As we said an idea we found the object in the treasure chest. Then we passed around tubs with the different scents we might smell at the seaside like salty water, ice-cream or suncream.

Soon we had lots of ideas and we spread them out to make a mind map. We thought of whether it was something we might hear, smell, taste, see or feel…

Then we used our mind map to make up poems about the seaside…

I can see … seagulls flapping

I can hear … waves swooshing

I can smell … salty seas

I can feel … sand tickling me

I can taste … ice-cream melting

 

I can see … water crashing

I can hear … seagulls squawking

I can smell … sunny sun-cream

I can feel … sand crunching

I can taste … cold ice-cream

 

We were learning…

To describe what we could see, hear, smell, taste and touch

To explore using all our senses

To think about describing words and learn new words

What poems are and how they are different to songs and stories

To talk about our own experiences

To sound out words to write

To sort and organise our ideas

How can you continue learning at home?

Encourage children to describe things. Rather than them saying something smells or tastes nice ask children what it reminds them of. Give them a choice of words and ask them why they like things or don’t like things. Describe things that you like – e.g. I like these sweets they are sour like lemons.

Books like Dear Zoo are great for teaching children about describing words. They can think of their own words to describe each animal. Or The Gruffalo where children can use the picture and think of their own words to describe The Gruffalo.

Guessing presents

On our quiet table this week have had lots of mystery presents. We wrapped objects from the classroom in foil then tried to guess what they might be.

We weren’t allowed to unwrap the presents so we had to look. feel and listen to the presents. We even tried to smell them to give us a clue!

We tried to work out what we thought they might be by their shape and texture and whether they made a sound.

We did lots of describing to talk about the presents. Sometimes we agreed with our friends and sometimes we didn’t.

At the end we had a look to see if we were right.
