Firework Fun! (Homemade Lava Lamps, Balloon Drop Painting and Sparklers)

Standard
Firework Fun! (Homemade Lava Lamps, Balloon Drop Painting and Sparklers)

This week in nursery we have had so much firework fun!

Here are some of our favourite activities …

Lava Lamps

We made our own lava lamps. First we followed instructions and filled the bottle with 2/3 oil, 1/3 water and a few drops of food colouring.

We watched the water sink to the bottom and separate from the oil, the colouring changed the colour of the water but not the oil.

Then we dropped in an Alka Seltzer and watched the colourful bubbles.

We changed the experiment by adding more water and food colouring or more tablets then talked about what we could see happening.

This is a great experiment for you to try at home and no mess!

Sparklers and Hot Chocolate

As it was Bonfire Night last weekend we celebrated with Sparklers and Hot Chocolate.

We thought about how to keep ourselves safe and what we could see happening.

Balloon Drop Painting

Everybody loved this activity. We blew up balloons and dipped them in paint. Then we dropped them and rolled them onto black paper to create firework pictures. A sprinkle of glitter and they were done!

We had lots of fun and learnt our colours, we also thought about what would happen when we dropped them from different heights or if we rolled them instead.

You could try this activity at home with leftover birthday balloons, just be prepared for a little mess!

Making Fireworks

We have had lots of fun making fireworks this week.

We used loose parts to make our own fireworks and  we made fireworks in the workshop our of tubes and paper.

We made gloop out of cornflour and water then added lolly pop sticks, food colouring and glitter to make our firework pictures. In the water tray we added gliitter, tubes and empty baubles and swirled the water to look like fireworks.

Mirror Painting

Standard
Mirror Painting

We have been getting ready for our new friends arriving in nursery and the older children going to their new classes. To get ready we learnt all about what makes us us. We thought about the ways we were similar and the ways we were different and what makes us special. We looked very closely at ourselves and our friends and painted our portraits on mirrors. What do you think of our paintings?

We had to think about our skin colour, using paint chips to choose the shade we needed. We thought about our hair colour and eye colour and chose the colours we needed. Then we looked at our friends’ work and critiqued it to think about how we could make it even better. We reminded our friends about adding ears and necks or changing the colours they had chosen. Painting on mirrors is also a lovely sensory experience for younger children who like the feel of the paint on the smooth surface. You can try this at home on any smooth or plastic surface like an old container that you do not want anymore.

Art goes SPLAT!

Art goes SPLAT!

We had a fun afternoon in our art studio today making…Splat Art!

First we squeezed blobs of different coloured paint onto our card. We talked about the colours we could see before hiding them under circles of cotton wool.

112

Next came the fun bit. We hit the circle with a plastic hammer and watched the paint go splat!

113

We experimented with tools and hitting to try and make the biggest splat!

Then we took away the circles and looked at our pictures.

Finally we mixed the paint together with our fingers to see what colours we could make.

We had lots of fun making our splatter art. Why not continue having fun with paint at home?

Try painting with tools from around the home – spoons, mashers and spatulas make great painting tools. Playing with finger paints is a really good way to explore what happens when you mix colours.

Exploring Colour Mixing

Standard

This week we are exploring colour mixing. We used the primary colours red, yellow and blue and explored what happened when we mixed them together.

We have been mixing colours outside using squeezy bottles and scrapers in the tuff spot. First we added little blobs of colour and used our fingers to mix them on our paper. Then we used the scrapers to spread the paint and mix them together. We talked about what we could see and what we thought might happen.

In the sensory tray we used milk and droppers to mix colours together and see what happened. We liked the swirling patterns the colours made before they mixed together.

In the water tray we used food colouring in squeezy bottles. We added block paints and explored what happened when we poured the coloured water on. Then we used brushes to mix the colours together and droppers to collect the coloured water.

In the painting area the children have been mixing the colours independently and talking about what happens.

The children talked about the colours they made and the changes they could see. Some children started to predict what might happen when we mixed the colours together. Then we started adding more of each colour to see what might happen.

We learnt a lot about colours and colour mixing. We also thought about predicting and saying why we think something might happen.

Could you do some colour mixing experiments at home? What happens if you mix orange and black currant juice? Or when you add coco pops to milk? Ask a grown up to see if you could do some investigations together. We would love to hear about them!

Superhero Fun

Standard

This week we have been having lots of superhero fun! We turned our role-play area into a superhero den!

031

We had lots of fun building dens, phoning superheroes, catching baddies, dressing up and using our super powers!

We made super vehicles to help the superheroes get around. Some we pulled, some could fly and some could go super fast!

030 076

On the easel we painted superheroes. We thought about how we wanted them to look then gave them extra powers!

028

We played super number splat. We had to get the different superhero numbers and say the numbers when they went SPLAT! We hit the number that cam next, thought about one more and one less and put the numbers in order.

027 072 073 051 After we had played super number splat we added padlocks to the superheroes. We then attached the keys to numicon so the children had to match the number to free the superhero!

Everybody knows superheroes have a lot of washing to do so we did some super washing! In the water tray we quickly washed the superhero pants and socks then hung them up to dry.

026

We had to count to make sure we had the right number of pegs and hung them out to dry.

017 062 046 045 049

We made superhero slime with bugs and insects stuck inside. We had to try and rescue them from the super slime.

086 DSCF2696 068 062 077 076 054 053

As part of our superhero training we made our fingers stronger at the dough table. We had balls of plasticine in different colours and had to use our fingers to mix them together and make different colours.

085 DSCF2697056055057058054051

At group time we have been doing some super learning! We thought about our favourite superheroes and made a pictogram to show the superheroes we liked best. We talked about which superhero most children liked, we counted the superheroes and we compared the superheroes.

DSCF2651 DSCF2652 DSCF2653 DSCF2654 DSCF2656 DSCF2658 DSCF2659 DSCF2661 DSCF2662 DSCF2664

In the outdoor area we used water pistols to shoot at superhero numbers. The children said the number than shot it with water.

The children built a superhero obstacle course using balance beams, tyres and climbing blocks.

We made a superhero laser beam letter hunt!

We chose a card then searched for the sounds, we found the initial sounds then tried to find the other sounds in the word. We had to watch out for the laser beams!

Building in Nursery

Standard

We have been doing lots of fun activities this week in Nursery for our buildings theme.

In the sensory tray we have been playing with sand slime. We used it to stick blocks together and build walls using the tools.

image

In the play dough we use vehicle cutters, diggers and rocks.

image

In the water tray we used colourful ice to make sculptures. We added fake snow, styrofoam and white foam cylinders to build models.

image

In the painting area we used Duplo blocks to stamp patterns.
