Today was our second physical day! Every Wednesday we do PE in nursery so we decided to fill the rest of our day with lots of fun physical activities.
It is important to do big movement activities that build the muscles in arms, legs and shoulders. This helps with balance and coordination and is important before we start building the smaller muscles in our hands and wrists ready for writing. Each week we will be doing different physical activities to build muscles, strength and coordination.
So far we have…
walked up to the secret garden to collect leaves and conkers
had races on the sports field
ran and used the apparatus in PE
used crayons to draw and write on big paper on the floor
turned over the tables and wrapped cling film around to paint on
crawled, jumped and climbed with the soft play
done some tricky balancing in yoga
and we even joined key stage two for a bit of take ten dancing!
What will we get up to next week?
We love to learn about different cultures and celebrations and this week we have been talking about Chinese New Year. Before the break we watched videos of how Chinese New Year was celebrated and the children decided that they would like to create their own dragon puppets, dragon stories and to do a dragon dance!
We worked together to paint our dragon. We have not painted something this large for a while and we learnt that we needed to use different techniques to when we paint on the easel.
When we had finished painting our dragon we added glitter and fabric. Then the children decided that they would like to make drums to play as we danced like we had seen in the video. Everyone had their own way to make their drums, then we tested them to listen to the sounds they made.
We were all so excited to do our dragon dance and finally it was time to take our giant dragon to the hall. We danced to the music and moved up and down in time to do our dragon dance.
We had so much fun the children decided that next week we would like to learn about music and dancing from different countries. Check back to see what we get up to!
This week’s home learning in nursery has been to build a car and we have had some amazing ones!
Take a look at what we have been making at home…
If you have not finished yours yet don’t worry. Bring it back to nursery for Wednesday for a special prize!
Well Monday was a very rainy day. It was so rainy in Sheffield that even some of the buses and trams stopped running! But in nursery we like to make the most of the wet weather. Our new outdoor suits and wellies mean we can go out whatever the weather and we did!
We had lots of fun painting outdoors. We tried different paints, chalks and crayons on paper then put them in the rain to see what would happen…
“It’s washing it away”
“It’s getting it clean”
“It’s making purple water down the yard”
“That one int, that one is still there”
We also made some sounds and music with the rain.
In a tuff spot we put different containers and let them fill up with water. We then hit them to listen to the different sounds they made…
Do you go out when it is rainy?
There’s lots of fun to be had in the rain. You can splash in puddles, sprinkle paint in puddles to make pictures, build shelters, put out pans and let them fill up with water and listen to the sounds, catch the rain etc… Just make sure you’ve got coats and wellies on!
We have been getting ready for our new friends arriving in nursery and the older children going to their new classes. To get ready we learnt all about what makes us us. We thought about the ways we were similar and the ways we were different and what makes us special. We looked very closely at ourselves and our friends and painted our portraits on mirrors. What do you think of our paintings?
We had to think about our skin colour, using paint chips to choose the shade we needed. We thought about our hair colour and eye colour and chose the colours we needed. Then we looked at our friends’ work and critiqued it to think about how we could make it even better. We reminded our friends about adding ears and necks or changing the colours they had chosen. Painting on mirrors is also a lovely sensory experience for younger children who like the feel of the paint on the smooth surface. You can try this at home on any smooth or plastic surface like an old container that you do not want anymore.
We have had a very exciting time in nursery today, it has been SNOWING!
We worked together to build a snowman. We used buckets, shovels and spades to collect the snow then rolled a head for the snowman. Then we added rocks for the eyes, a carrot nose, a scarf and hat, stick arms and we painted his mouth!
We had some fun new snow sledges to use with our friends. We tied a rope to the end then pulled our friends through the snow.
We took block paints, water colours and spray bottles out into the snow. Then we used them to paint patterns and pictures in the snow, even the snowman got painted!
We had lots of fun in the snow today, we hope it snows tomorrow!
This week in nursery it’s been very COLD so we have been doing some exciting winter activities.
Our new favourite activity is SNOW SLIME. It is white and stretchy and grows when you pull it. We made snow balls, igloos, ice skating rinks and stretched it out.
On the easels we have been painting on foil. It was a bit trickier than painting on paper and made some interesting sounds.
When it snowed we collected some for our water tray. We painted using brushes and block paints, it was fun to watch the colours mix.
We explored blue and white winter themed loose parts. We balanced them and attached them together to make patterns and models.
