Today is National Poetry Day. Each year there is a different theme and this year the theme is change. After spending time in the secret garden this week and looking at the changing leaves and conkers we have been doing a lot of talking about Autumn.

Poem was a brand new word so we thought about what it meant. We decided a poem was a bit like a story and a bit like a song and it could tell us about how things look, feel, sound, taste or smell.

We talked about Autumn and all the changes we had noticed. The children described what they could see and hear and we put our ideas together to turn them into a poem.

Autumn and Spiders

This week we have been having lots of fun learning about Autumn and Spiders. Have a look what we have been up to…

We have been building our fine motor skills ready for writing by threading beads on sticks and pinching Autumn items to put on the sticky easel.

We have been doing lots of planting in our yard and learning about plants and how they grow.

We spun spider webs and learnt to follow instructions and work as a team.

We also made up lots of songs about Incy Wincy Spider…

How can you continue learning at home?

Carry on searching for Autumn items – conkers, leaves, acorns etc

Make an Autumn picture with what you have found

Make up your own Incy Wincy Song

Do some planting at home, in your garden or indoors

Lots of children found leaves on their way to school and brought them in to share.

We collected all the leaves together outside.

First we thought of the different ways we could sort them; into type, shape, size and colour.

Then we used the leaves to make pictograms.

We made lines of the different leaves. We compared the groups to see which we had the most of and the least of.

We thought of different pictograms to make and talked about what we could see.
