Under the Microscope

Under the Microscope

Last Wednesday we were very lucky to have the microscopes in nursery all day. We had lots of fun looking at what we could see.

At first we thought it was a bit tricky to see things under the microscope but the boys had some good advice. They said to shut one eye like a pirate and then they could see!

We had to be very careful with the microscopes. We looked in and turned them very slowly until the object came into focus. The girls then had an idea to draw the tiniest pictures they could to see what they would look like under the microscopes…

We had lots of fun looking at things under the microscope. We were surprised how different things looked up close especially when we put our hands underneath!

Class Fund and Messy Fun

Class Fund and Messy Fun

In nursery we love to have lots of messy fun. We like making play dough, slime and gloop. We like to taste different foods and to cook and bake. We love to investigate and explore, to plant and to experiment.

We couldn’t have all this fun without your help from class fund. Your 50p a week goes towards all these fun activities! Have a look at some of the things we get up to below…

Exploring Colour Mixing

This week we are exploring colour mixing. We used the primary colours red, yellow and blue and explored what happened when we mixed them together.

We have been mixing colours outside using squeezy bottles and scrapers in the tuff spot. First we added little blobs of colour and used our fingers to mix them on our paper. Then we used the scrapers to spread the paint and mix them together. We talked about what we could see and what we thought might happen.

In the sensory tray we used milk and droppers to mix colours together and see what happened. We liked the swirling patterns the colours made before they mixed together.

In the water tray we used food colouring in squeezy bottles. We added block paints and explored what happened when we poured the coloured water on. Then we used brushes to mix the colours together and droppers to collect the coloured water.

In the painting area the children have been mixing the colours independently and talking about what happens.

The children talked about the colours they made and the changes they could see. Some children started to predict what might happen when we mixed the colours together. Then we started adding more of each colour to see what might happen.

We learnt a lot about colours and colour mixing. We also thought about predicting and saying why we think something might happen.

Could you do some colour mixing experiments at home? What happens if you mix orange and black currant juice? Or when you add coco pops to milk? Ask a grown up to see if you could do some investigations together. We would love to hear about them!

Environment Week

We have had a very busy week this week at school, it has been environment week.

We have been learning all about how to look after our planet.

First we we read the story of the Lorax by Dr Seuss, we thought about how we would like our environment to look and how we could keep it looking that way.

We learnt about recycling. We had lots of rubbish in our classroom to search through and sort out.

Then we had a competition. We used empty containers to try and design something useful for our classroom. We made containers to wash our brushes in, pencil pots and book holders.

We thought about other ways we could look after the world such as; turning off lights and technology to save electricity, shutting doors to save heat, turning off taps to save water, reusing our drink bottles, fixing broken things instead of throwing them away and saving the pips and seeds from our snack to grow new fruit and vegetables.

We thought about what might happen if we don’t look after our planet. We looked at what happens to the water when there is rubbish in it. We compared clean water to water with rubbish in. The water with rubbish in turned a dark colour and smelt horrible! We thought about what we could do to keep the water clean for the animals that live in it.

At group time we walked into the room and there was rubbish everywhere! We had to sort it all out into things made of metal, plastic and paper. We used magnets to help us decide if things were made of metal. We felt the materials to see if they were made of plastic or paper.

Then we made a movie about how we could look after the world!

Come back soon to see our movie!
