Giant Bubbles, bearded dragons, fire and paddling pools

Giant Bubbles, bearded dragons, fire and paddling pools

Over our last week or two in nursery we have been having lots of fun doing our favourite activities…

We have been experimenting with the perfect recipe for making giant bubbles.  We have tried lots of different recipes, even adding cornflour and glycerine to our mixture.

We filled a tuff spot with our special bubble mix and used a hoop to make giant bubbles. Then we used sticks and wool to make our own bubble sticks.

Have a look at our amazing giant bubbles…

Our best recipe was 4 cups of water, 1 cup of washing up liquid and 2 tablespoons of glycerine.

We made the most of the sunny weather and went on a nature walk to the secret garden, seeing what we could find to fill our bags along the way…

And when it got very warm we made a paddling pool outside to cool off!

Lots of children will be going to reception in September so we have been spending lots of time with Miss Deighton and Miss Boyd as well as in our new classrooms ready for September. We have been learning about reception…

072

And we even had a fire with Miss Deighton and toasted marshmallows!

058

Miss Beckett brought in her bearded dragon for us to see and we took it in turns to hold him…

053

We had a great time at our Sports Day and lots of parents came to cheer us on…

063

And of course we have had parties to celebrate our last day at nursery!

Today we had a lovely time on our trip to Norfolk Park. We went on a nature walk, played sports day style games, had a picnic, played even more games and went on the adventure playground.

A huge thank you to everyone who came, the bit of rain didn’t put us off! We hope you all had a great time too.

Treasure Hunt!

Treasure Hunt!

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at maps and talking about where things are. Last week the children had lots of pirate ideas for what we could do next…

First we turned our house into a pirate ship then the children added extra details like a steering wheel and anchor and drew treasure maps to play with…

We have been learning to blend our sounds and sound out words to read and write. We have been enjoying learning with the Alphablocks characters and playing games to help us learn our letters and sounds…

C79F408D-EC48-4B48-9620-1F53B83508A7

In maths we set up obstacle courses and described to our friends which way they needed to go using directions and positions. We made it extra tricky by taking it in turns to be blindfolded and trying to find the treasure by following our friends directions.

Then it was time for our treasure hunt! We had decided we needed clues to follow to get the treasure and that we’d like to go to the secret garden. The clues were tricky and we had to work out the answer to find the next clue. For some clues we had to find the rhyme or blend the sounds in the words as well as remembering our positions and directions to find where things were…

We had lots of fun on our treasure hunt, click below to watch the movie!

How can you continue learning at home?

Positions and directions are great to practise at home. You could –

Go on your own treasure hunt!

Make up dances – one step forward, arms in front, turn around…

Play robot games – take it in turns to be a robot and collect objects. Give each other directions for which way you need to go!

Play games while tidying up – “Can you find 3 things that go under the bed?” “Can you find something big that lives next to the cupboard?”

Make your own maps for where you live, how to get to the shops or how to get to Grandma’s house, draw all the things you see on the way

You could continue the pirate fun by making your own treasure maps, paper pirate hats or a ship out of a box!

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Standard
Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Last week lots of the children were busy making picnics with their friends so this week we had a real teddy bear’s picnic! The children decided they would like buns and pizza for their picnic and we wrote a letter home to bring in our teddies.

We wanted the children to be able to join in with the process of cooking and baking so we found an easy peasy pizza dough recipe that the children could do themselves.

We also used a mini-oven so we could watch the pizzas cook and talk about the changes.

As well as making pizzas we worked together to bake buns for our picnic too. We have been learning our numbers to 10 and that helped us to read our recipe. We used the numbers and pictures to follow the recipe ourselves.

Then we took our pizzas and buns and went to the secret garden for our teddy bears picnic!

We love seeing your photos of baking and cooking together at home. Baking activities are a great way to learn about numbers and measures as well as learning about changes and how to keep ourselves safe.

World Book Day

On Friday we celebrated World Book Day!

We love World Book Day in nursery, it’s a chance for the children (and teachers!) to dress up as their favourite book characters. Have a look at some of the children’s amazing outfits…

We also have a competition to decorate our door like our favourite story. This year we chose Dear Zoo and the children had a fun week decorating boxes and making animals to go on the door…

156

Have a look at some of the other amazing doors around school…

We had a busy day making puppets and characters from our favourite stories. We also shared some of our favourite books and some children brought in their favourite books from home to share with their friends.

All Fun and Games

All Fun and Games

Last week Leelan asked if we could buy a board game for nursery and Miss Hulme wondered if we could make our own. Some of the children were very excited and drew their designs…

157

We used felt squares to make Lois and Miss Morris’ idea of a game of Twister…

134

We took photos of our pictures and played Guess Who…

059

We played some fun games in PE…

058057

We played some board games in the classroom…

We designed and made our own board game…

The children had lots of great ideas and learnt lots while playing their games. We learnt to take turns and negotiate with our friends. We learnt to follow instructions and understand the rules of the games. We also had to explain the rules of the games to our friends. We did lots of counting in our dice games and matched colours in Twister. Games are a great way to teach children lots of different skills from ‘Simon Says’ to board games children can learn lots of new things in a fun way. Which games do you like to play at home?

Create a Christmas T-shirt Competition

Create a Christmas T-shirt Competition

We are getting in the festive spirit in nursery and today we had a Christmas T-shirt competition. Yesterday we split into teams and each team designed and decorated their own t-shirt. We used fabric paints to paint on our design then added glitter, baubles and other Christmassy things from around the classroom.

019021022

Then we wrote a letter to Mr Sieczkarek to invite him to judge our contest…

023

Today Mr Sieczkarek came to judge the winner…

We had lots of fun decorating our Christmas t-shirts. We hope you’re having lots of fun doing Christmas crafts at home. Click here to see some ideas from our Christmas Workshop or have a look here on the cbeebies site for more festive fun!

Christmas Workshop

Standard
Christmas Workshop

Thank you to all the parents who stayed for our Christmas Workshop this morning, we had lots of fun. All of our activities used bits and pieces from around nursery. We saved up empty jars and cans and collected scraps of wrapping paper, foam and felt to use again. We recycled old baubles to redecorate into something new. Why not have a look around at home and see what you can find to make your Christmas crafts?

We made our own snow globes…

All you need is an empty jar, some strong glue, a small toy, some water and some glitter. We did this job with Mrs Brown as she used the glue gun to attach our figures to the lid of the jar. Then we added water and glitter and stuck the lid on. They look great!

We made lots of Christmas decorations…

We used lollypop sticks, pipe cleaners and wire to create our own Christmas decorations then added glitter glue and coloured to make them our own.We used felt to make mini stocking and cut more pieces to decorate.

We used triangles of foam to make colourful Christmas trees then decorated and stuck to a ribbon to create a garland.

We made reindeer tins…

We used coffee tins wrapped in brown paper and added eye stickers, art straw antlers, ears and red button noses.

We made our own Christmas cards…

We used folded pieces of card and drew pictures then stuck on foam, glitter, stars and whatever else we wanted to use to make them our own.

We made yummy melting Snowman biscuits…

We used icing and chocolate beans to decorate biscuits to look like melting snowmen! We added pretzel pieces for the arms and used icing pens to add extra detail.

We decorated old baubles…

We used glue and scraps of wrapping paper and tissue paper to decorate then added string to hang them.

As well as being lots of fun joining in with arts and craft activities helps children to build fine motor skills that are really important for helping them to hold a pencil and learning to write. Using scissors is a great way to build hand strength and coordination and tearing little pieces of paper helps children to develop the smaller muscles in their hand and gain more control. Craft activities are also a great way to learn about colours and shapes by talking about what you see as you are making. The making is always much more important than how it looks at the end so let children do as much for themselves as you can and they will become more confident and learn much more, their creation will also be much more individual to them!

We always love to see your creations. If you make something at home why not bring it to school or email us a picture? We print all the pictures you send and the children love sharing them with their friends.
