Eid Mubarak

Today we have had a lovely day celebrating Eid. This morning we had a workshop and lots of parents stayed to join in with crafts and activities and this afternoon was our Eid party…

Christmas Workshop

Thank you to all the parents who stayed for our Christmas Workshop this morning, we had lots of fun. All of our activities used bits and pieces from around nursery. We saved up empty jars and cans and collected scraps of wrapping paper, foam and felt to use again. We recycled old baubles to redecorate into something new. Why not have a look around at home and see what you can find to make your Christmas crafts?

We made our own snow globes…

All you need is an empty jar, some strong glue, a small toy, some water and some glitter. We did this job with Mrs Brown as she used the glue gun to attach our figures to the lid of the jar. Then we added water and glitter and stuck the lid on. They look great!

We made lots of Christmas decorations…

We used lollypop sticks, pipe cleaners and wire to create our own Christmas decorations then added glitter glue and coloured to make them our own.We used felt to make mini stocking and cut more pieces to decorate.

We used triangles of foam to make colourful Christmas trees then decorated and stuck to a ribbon to create a garland.

We made reindeer tins…

We used coffee tins wrapped in brown paper and added eye stickers, art straw antlers, ears and red button noses.

We made our own Christmas cards…

We used folded pieces of card and drew pictures then stuck on foam, glitter, stars and whatever else we wanted to use to make them our own.

We made yummy melting Snowman biscuits…

We used icing and chocolate beans to decorate biscuits to look like melting snowmen! We added pretzel pieces for the arms and used icing pens to add extra detail.

We decorated old baubles…

We used glue and scraps of wrapping paper and tissue paper to decorate then added string to hang them.

As well as being lots of fun joining in with arts and craft activities helps children to build fine motor skills that are really important for helping them to hold a pencil and learning to write. Using scissors is a great way to build hand strength and coordination and tearing little pieces of paper helps children to develop the smaller muscles in their hand and gain more control. Craft activities are also a great way to learn about colours and shapes by talking about what you see as you are making. The making is always much more important than how it looks at the end so let children do as much for themselves as you can and they will become more confident and learn much more, their creation will also be much more individual to them!

Easter Workshop

On Friday morning we enjoyed our annual Easter Workshop. Our parents stayed and helped us with lots of fun Easter Crafts. Have a look at what we got up to…

Rabbit Ears

You will need – white card, pink card or paper, scissors, glue and a stapler.

Method – Cut a piece of white card and measure it to the size of your head. Staple it. Cut out ears and add pink inside. Staple or glue them to your head band.

Easter Nests 

You will need – chocolate, cornflakes, mini eggs, bun cases, spoon, bowl.

Method – Melt chocolate in a bowl (we used the microwave and checked it regularly) add cornflakes and mix. Scoop into bun case and add mini eggs.

Easter Cards 

You will need – coloured paper, white card, scissors, glue, straws, pencil

Method – Fold your card in half. Choose a piece of coloured paper and draw around your hand. Cut it out, twist it into a flower shape and glue it in place. Stick a straw on for the stem.

Bunny Bags 

You will need – paper plates, ribbon, pencils, googley eyes, hole puncher, coloured paper, stapler

Method – Cut one paper plate in half and staple it to your other paper plate. Cut out ear shapes and draw a face on your rabbit (optional extras – pompoms and googley eyes). Punch holes in your rabbit and tie on ribbon for a handle. Fill with eggs!

Firework Fun! (Homemade Lava Lamps, Balloon Drop Painting and Sparklers)

This week in nursery we have had so much firework fun!

Here are some of our favourite activities …

Lava Lamps

We made our own lava lamps. First we followed instructions and filled the bottle with 2/3 oil, 1/3 water and a few drops of food colouring.

We watched the water sink to the bottom and separate from the oil, the colouring changed the colour of the water but not the oil.

Then we dropped in an Alka Seltzer and watched the colourful bubbles.

We changed the experiment by adding more water and food colouring or more tablets then talked about what we could see happening.

This is a great experiment for you to try at home and no mess!

Sparklers and Hot Chocolate

As it was Bonfire Night last weekend we celebrated with Sparklers and Hot Chocolate.

We thought about how to keep ourselves safe and what we could see happening.

Balloon Drop Painting 

Everybody loved this activity. We blew up balloons and dipped them in paint. Then we dropped them and rolled them onto black paper to create firework pictures. A sprinkle of glitter and they were done!

We had lots of fun and learnt our colours, we also thought about what would happen when we dropped them from different heights or if we rolled them instead.

You could try this activity at home with leftover birthday balloons, just be prepared for a little mess!

Making Fireworks

We have had lots of fun making fireworks this week.

We used loose parts to make our own fireworks and  we made fireworks in the workshop our of tubes and paper.

We made gloop out of cornflour and water then added lolly pop sticks, food colouring and glitter to make our firework pictures. In the water tray we added gliitter, tubes and empty baubles and swirled the water to look like fireworks.
