Today we celebrated ‘Wear it Wild’ Day. We all dressed up as wild animals to raise money and awareness about endangered species. Check out our amazing costumes!
About Wear it Wild
Wear it Wild is WWF’s annual fundraising event.
In workplaces, schools and homes up and down the land, people will be donning wildlife-inspired fancy dress – and raising money to save incredible wildlife at the same time.
Since 1970, populations of wild species have fallen by half. Without the tireless efforts of conservation organisations like WWF, iconic species like tigers, elephants and rhinos could become extinct in our lifetimes.
We’re not going to let that happen. But we rely on the support of people like you to bring about a future where people live in harmony with nature.
Taking part in Wear it Wild is a great way to raise funds, raise awareness – and have fun too.

As well as dressing up and learning about wild animals we also made animal masks in our weekly workshop with our grown-ups. We have so much fun for ‘Wear it Wild’
Last Wednesday we went on our first nursery school trip to Graves Park!
We had a lovely time seeing and feeding all the animals, having a picnic and ice-creams and playing on the park.

In nursery we love to make up our own stories. Sometimes we use objects to help us think of a story, sometimes we change a story we already know or sometimes we use pictures to help us. Last week we looked at funny photos of animals and made up stories about what we could see happening.
Lots of the children then wanted to write and draw their stories in their books too…
Here are some of our stories…
Once upon a time there was a zebra called Stripey and he had to go to his work. His work was a job in town. He was too tired, he asked his friend Giraffe to give him a piggy back. Giraffe took him to his job and he got there very fast with his big legs and he wasn’t late. Oh no! Giraffe couldn’t fit in the door. Stripey said “I know!” and Giraffe put his neck down so Stripey could fit through the door. He went to his job. The End.
Once upon a time there was a frog called Tiny Tim. He wants to go to the seaside so he jumps on Gary the Snail. “Ribbit”. He says “Go Gary Go!” But Gary the snail is a snail and he goes very slowlyyyy. “Oh no!” said Tiny Tim. He jumped off Gary the Snail. “Ribbit”. Then he jumped onto a horse coz horses are fast. The horse went fast fast fast to the seaside and Tiny Tim built a sandcastle. Gary the Snail was very slow he got to the seaside and it was dark and it was bedtime. They went to sleep. The End.
How can you continue learning at home?
Why not make up your own story? You could change one of your favourite stories, you could put yourself into a story that you like, You could look at pictures and tell stories about what is happening, you could dress up and act out stories or you could use your toys to tell your own stories.
Story Telling is a great way to help children’s speaking and listening skills. It helps them to be imaginative and listen to other’s ideas. It helps them to understand stories ready for when they start to read stories themselves.
Our story this week is The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle.
We have lots of chameleon and animal activities to do in nursery.
Our play dough this week is Mixed-Up Chameleon dough.
We made yellow play dough following our usual recipe (see post Our Favourite Recipes) and added a bit of conditioner to make it extra soft with a lovely smell!
We added animal cutters along with feathers, buttons, googley eyes, straws and colourful matchsticks to create our own weird and wonderful animals.
On the maths table we have been playing the game ‘Feed me Flies’ (from http://buggyandbuddy.com/mixed-chameleon-eric-carle/ )
We stuck plastic chameleons to tubes of the same colour. Then we used black beads and pieces of art straws to create flies. The children roll the dice and use the pegs to count out that many flies. This builds children counting skills as well as their fine motor skills. We added number cards and number tracks to extend children’s learning and support number recognition.
We have also been doing lots of camouflage activities around the story. First we talked about what camouflage meant then tried to match the patterns to the animals to camouflage them.
The children matched the animal to their fur pattern using animal print texture cards.
In the water tray we filled the tub with different coloured sensory materials such as pebbles, corn, foam and glass beads. The children matched the animals to the background where it could be camouflaged.
The children built on their maths skills recalling their previous learning about patterns and thinking about sorting and matching. Children learnt about camouflage, they thought about the similarities and differences between animals and learnt new animal names.
In the outdoor area we went on a chameleon hunt. We cut chameleons out of coloured plastic and stuck them to objects of the same colour so they were camouflaged. The children then hunted for chameleons.
This week we have been thinking about owls as part of our Magical Me theme.
In our water tray we have had spaghetti and straws to make bird nests. We used the scissors to cut the straws and spaghetti.

In nursery we have been looking at how tall we are. We have been using the height chart to see what animal we are as tall as.
We can see the animals that we are taller than.
We can see the animals that we are shorter than.
We can measure our friends and see who is the tallest.
We talked about what might help us grow.
