In nursery we love to make a movie! Did you see our movie of The Three Little Pigs?  

Over the last two weeks the children have been making their own movies. They have thought of the scripts, made costumes, filmed and even edited their movies together (with a little bit of help!)

Easy Peasy Pizza!

After having a lovely time celebrating Pancake Day the children thought we should have a new celebration, ‘Pizza Day!’

We had an easy peasy recipe for making pizza dough – 1 cup of self-raising flour and 1 cup of yoghurt. We mixed them together then chopped up vegetables for the topping.

We walked around school and took orders from the grown-ups in school.

Then we cooked our pizza thinking about how to keep ourselves safe.

In the classroom we made pizzas in the workshop.

Then we sold the pizzas in our pizza restaurant. Pizza cost 1 penny a slice so we counted how much money we had and how much pizza we could buy.

Then we ate our pizza in the restaurant!

What were we learning about? 

We learnt how to be safe using knives to cut and cooking in the oven.

We were learning to talk to less familiar adults and to ask questions.

We learnt about changes and what happens when we mix ingredients together and cook things.

We learnt the names of vegetables and to try new things.

In our restaurant we learnt to count out amounts. We learnt about numbers as we exchanged 1 penny for 1 piece of pizza.

We all took different roles with children making the pizza, selling the pizza, waiting on the tables and being the customers.

How can you continue learning at home? 

Why not have a go at making pizza at home? Just mix one cup of self-raising flour with one cup of yoghurt. Top tip for a crispy base let a tray get hot in the oven first and then put your dough on.

We were a bit unsure about some vegetable names especially onions, mushrooms and peppers. Try pointing out vegetable names when cooking or shopping.

We had lots of fun buying and selling pizza. Why not make your own shop at home? You can use pennies and toys or even things from your kitchen cupboards to buy and sell.

 

 

The Magic Rainbow Bus

This week the children decided to make a ‘magic rainbow bus’

We worked together to stick different coloured pieces of card on it. Then we added special features like wheels, headlights, windows, a moving door and even a magnetic registration plate.

We are very proud of our bus and have already been on lots of adventures to the park for picnics, Monkey business and Asda!

Dear Zoo

Last week began with lots of letter writing. The children were writing letters home and to their friends. We got out the post bag so we could deliver our letters.

In the construction area lots of children were building cages and zoos for the animals.

We remembered our story from guided reading all about sending letters to the zoo. It was called ‘Dear Zoo’. We read it at story time and then we got a delivery from the zoo!

We weighed the animals to see if they could be sent in the post. As everybody knows only animals that weigh less than a hamster can be sent in the post.

Some of the animals were feeling a little bit poorly but luckily the vets were there to make sure they were ok.

Some of the children decided they needed to use tools to make their zoos even better.

Then they asked to build a real zoo with real tools!

We thought about what we would need and wrote a letter to Ella’s daddy who looks after our school.

Then we drew designs for how we wanted our zoo to look.

We used the big drill, the saw and the screwdrivers to build our zoo. We had to work together and be very careful. We had lots of fun, especially using the big drill!

When the zoo was finished we sorted the animals to see who could live inside it.

What were we learning about? 

This week the children decided everything we learnt about. All the activities were planned because of what the children said or did. This way the children were very interested in their learning.

The children did lots of mark making. They wrote letters to the zoo and to other people. They drew designs for their zoo and talked about their pictures.

We learnt about letter writing. We made sure we said who our letters were to and who they were from.

We learnt the names of different animals including more unusual animals like flamingos.

The children had discussions about where different animals live e.g. would we find a spider in the zoo? They learnt to ask questions and look in books to find the answers.

We learnt about vets. The children took on a role in their play, asking and answering questions. They began adding more mark making to their play by writing what was wrong with the animals.

We learnt about tools. We learnt how to be safe and manage risks.

In maths we learnt the words ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ and could sort the animals. We learnt that not everything that was big was heavy and not everything small was light.

How can you continue learning at home? 

Following children’s interests at home is a great way to help their learning.  Children that don’t normally pick up a pencil will often write more if it is part of their play.

If your child likes to build encourage them to draw what they are building and talk about their pictures.

If they like to play football and other games give them a pen and paper or chalk to write on the ground and encourage them to keep a score.

Letting the children use tools in a controlled and supervised environment allows them to learn about safety. For example, letting children use scissors and talking to them about how to use them safely means they are less likely to be dangerous with them than if they never use them.

This year in nursery we have made a little change in the way we plan our learning. Everything we learn about is now chosen by the children.

Each week we sit down together and think about what we would like to learn about and how we could do it. The adults collect ideas of the things the children have been talking about when they have been playing or at news time. We think about special visits or trips the children have been on and take photos of things they have brought to school or in the Share Box.

For the last few weeks in nursery we have been thinking all about story telling. First we used small world characters to tell stories with puppets, fairytale characters and some characters from our favourite movies. We added story stones to help us think of ideas for our story and extra props like magic wands and beanstalks.

Then we decided to be the characters in our story. We dressed up as the different characters we wanted to be and acted out stories. Then we used the Ipad ‘Storytime’ App.

We took photos and created a book.

What a lot of story telling!

Over the past few weeks we have noticed the children’s story telling improving a lot. The children tell more stories when they are dressed up. Even the quietest children have started to give the small world characters voices and began to tell simple stories with them. When reading books the children have been looking at pictures and beginning to make up their own stories. Some children have even being trying to draw and write their own stories in the mark making area!

How can you continue this learning at home?

There are lots of opportunities for story telling at home:

When children are playing with their toys (dolls, cars, superheroes), this is a great chance to encourage children to tell you about what is happening to the characters. Encourage children to tell you what might happen next, after that and how the story might end.

Dressing up is a great way to tell stories and learn about different characters. In nursery we like to use colourful pieces of fabric for dressing up, the children love being able to turn them into any character they want (although we often have a lot of Elsas!)

When you are sharing stories talk to children about what they can see happening in the pictures. Encourage children to use them to tell their own story.

In nursery we love to transport! This is when we move things from one place to another, filling every container we can find! So many of our children in nursery love to do this you might have noticed them doing it at home too!

Does your child like to fill up bags, buckets, prams and sometimes just their hands? Do they constantly take things from one place to another? Do they hide things in a special place? Do they collect things on their travels? Are their pockets always full?

Don’t worry! We see this at nursery too. It’s a completely normal part of their development. However we know this can be challenging , especially when everything keeps disappearing!

So we had a think about how to help the children learn through their transporting. First we read the children a story about their transporting (names have been hidden!)…

The children were very excited to read a book where they were the characters. They knew they liked to move things but talked about not being able to find things to play with. They decided that they would quite like lots of bags to fill up but they would remember to put things back when they had finished. We gave the children lots of bags and sacks to fill with things. The children had to remember to use their toys once they had taken them somewhere. We talked to the children about what they were going to put in their bags.

We made a game with the bags. We packed Christmas gifts for the different characters in the Jolly Postman. We had to look what was on the picture and just put those things inside the bag.

We made Santa’s sleighs to carry things around. We had sacks for toys and had to remember to deliver them to the right people. We then had to collect things back up to take them to the next children.

We made big Santa sleighs outside using the play pod. We filled suitcases with toys to deliver.

We did lots of posting activities to make our transporting more purposeful.

We also did other activities  like carrying blocks in the wheelbarrow, dressing up as the post man to deliver letters and finding a new way for Santa to carry his presents when his sleigh broke down.

Does your child transport? You can help to move their learning on…

Give children things to help them transport:

Bags, rucksacks, suitcases, bikes, trucks, prams, mops, brushes

Let them help with activities like:

Sweeping, vacuuming, tidying up, helping with unpacking shopping, writing and posting letters

Children will enjoy visits:

To the post box, the shops, transport museums, riding on buses and trams

After lots of talk about travelling and vehicles the children started making buses using the chairs around the classroom.

They went on lots of adventures so we decided to change our role-play area into a bus too.

We added money, steering wheels, phones, maps, bus tickets and seats. We also added bags and torches to pack for adventures.

Who took the Treasure?

We have been having lots of fun learning all about pirates over the last few weeks. Last week we made pirate ships outside and acted out some fun pirate stories.

First we collected some resources for our ship. We found tubes, poles, fabric, pegs, net, crates and even treasure chests!

The children then made up a pirate story:

“Arr we’re the Pirates.”

“We’re good pirates and bad pirates.”

“Ahoy.”

The Pirates decided if they were good or bad Pirates.

“Are you a good pirate or a bad pirate?”

“I’m a bad pirate I tell you walk the plank!”

“But I can’t swim!”

“The sharks will eat you!”

“Ahh!”

Suddenly a shark came along…

“I’m a shark!”

“We get you shark, trap you in the net!”

“In our trap!”

“Oh I’m trapped, I’m going to escape!”

The pirates then went on a hunt for some treasure and found an empty treasure chest.

Luckily the the pirates found some gold for their treasure chest and put it in their ship.

“Treasure”

“Lots of treasure”

“Let’s hide it”

Just as the pirates made plans to hide their treasure, along came a bad pirate!

“I’m a bad pirate arrrr”

“Oh no, she’s a bad pirate”

“I’m gonna get the treasure”

With a little help the bad pirate took the treasure!

The good pirates tried to get the treasure back but the bad pirate hid it in the trap!

The pirates then needed to draw a map so they knew where to find the treasure. They collected some paper and started their maps.

One of the pirates then decided to put their message in a bottle to send to other Pirates. She collected a bottle from the workshop inside and added her message.

I wonder who will find the treasure next?

 

 

What were we learning?

In their play children developed their imaginative language, speaking and listening skills, imaginative play and sharing their ideas with others.

They built on each other’s ideas to keep their play going.

Children then added mark making to their play drawing and writing messages and maps.

 

How can you continue this learning at home?

Provide children with pencils and paper to encourage writing and drawing in their play.

Encourage children to use things around them to extend their play and ideas.

Give children open-ended resources like cardboard boxes to develop their imaginative skills.

 

 

 

The Three Little Pigs Building Site

This week our role-play area is a building site for the Three Little Pigs.

We have lots of resources in there to help the children to talk and share their ideas, build and make up their own stories.

We have open-ended resources so children can use their imagination for how they want to use them. There are; blocks, sticks, boxes, a doll’s house, grass, straw, tools and puppets.
