Does your child use a dummy?

In nursery we have noticed that quite a lot of children still have a dummy. Did you know that it is recommending for children to no longer use a dummy after 12 months old?

We have been collecting dummies in nursery and giving them away to the dummy fairy. The children have even being getting special presents in return!

Having a dummy after your child has started to talk can lead to …

  • incorrect positioning of teeth so that the bottom and top teeth at the front don’t meet properly
  • tooth decay (especially the front teeth) if the dummy is dipped into sweet things
  • your child may tend to breathe through their mouth rather than their nose. This is often linked to long-term dribbling
  • your child may not use the full range of tongue movements that are necessary for making all the speech sounds
